With regard to pulling the sticks out after the fact - it seems that the current method relies largely on the glue-stick being drawn so that it thins out.
In your video you pulled vigorously on one end until it let go with a bang.

Would it be a refinement to pull on both ends to start with so that the stick thins along it's full length (at least the length inside the fitting) and then comes out more gracefully?

I'm all for making things go 'bang' when it's appropriate, but this looked like it may have used more effort than was strictly necessary!
