1) Most wood that's called 1" is actually 3/4" when finished and sold. Even if it were a full 1" it wouldn't matter in the least.

2) Laminated wood, generally hardwood to get enough stength without needlessly thick ribs, will work fine.

3) Many people use single part varnish to waterproof the cloth, works fine.
