Mike-
I just finished what I hope will be a 'rolling boat' using S&G for the hull and strips for the deck.
A few thoughts:
A hard-chine hull (like most all Greenland SOF boats) can be a pain to build in strips as you need to keep the chine transitions 'clean' with cheater strips and trimming. (See online comments on building the Black Pearl in strip.)
A Greenland-style deck with essentially flat ends and a 'bulge' up for the cockpit is probably easier with strips. Even with cheater strips , I found it a bit tricky. Bjorn Thomasson has some hints on dealing with the cockpit area on his website (using a flat cockpit 'dummy' while stripping) to avoid getting a highly 'S' shaped cockpit profile.
Another option would be the plywood deck style that Duane Strosaker used in his Black Skimmer.
Scarfing plywood- it's not that difficult, but I've had good luck with butt joints overlaid with glass/epoxy. (Dynamite Payson/Bolger were the first with this, I think, and Pygmy uses this with their kits...)
In '98 I built (in 4 days) a lightweight nesting dinghy for a 10-day sailing trip, using luan doorskins with epoxy/glass over. I figured I'd build a duplicate with 'good' plywood later. That dinghy is still going strong after quite a bit of use and some rough landings, banging against rocks and concrete, etc. So if you are 'cheap' you could consider saving on the plywood, especially if the design is a bit of an experiment.
Cheers
John
: I'm making mental notes on building a historic hull design from
: Kayaks of Greenland (not one you've already surveyed Bryan) with
: a hard shell, and I'm trying to calculate whether it would be
: cheaper to build it of strips or plywood. I've never built with
: plywood before, so I have a couple of questions.
: Is it worth it pay the significant significant upcharge for 4x10 so
: that I'll only have to do one scarf on the sides of the hull, or
: is it fine to buy 4x8 and do two? Because of the overhang at bow
: and stern I'll only need that one piece on either side to be
: close to 18', it seems an unnecessary expense to pay the premium
: for the longer material.
: Since I haven't drawn up the plans yet I have no way to calculate
: the amount of plywood I would need to make the thing. I've done
: strip before, and I can make an awfully good guess on that. A
: Night Heron would be a little bit bigger, probably, so can
: anyone tell me how many sheets they purchased to built a S+G
: Night Heron or S+G Guillemot?
: Thanks-
