The weight variation between types could make a difference if you were looking to build either a big volume boat, or something really light.
Fir is nasty stuff to work with, compared to the luan/meranti types, IMO.
Next plywood project, I'll probably try some 'lightweight' 3mm stuff. With epoxy on both sides, I don't worry much about the waterproof issue. Hate voids, though... :-)
