I definitely mean strapped in, or wedged in and removable.

Good question. I don't know of any documentation on Greenland kayaks
having ballast as there is on Aleut kayaks.

There's no way people who paddle for survival would not recognize the difference
in stability between a loaded and unloaded kayak. Arctic kayaks were work boats just
like the "Prospector" canoes.
