Great ideas. A spray-on high-build epoxy primer would be perfect. Using tight weave glass helps incredibly as well, even if it's used as a surfacer. You can also just load up the fill coat(s) with microballoons to really speed up work (with a change in other properties). The body shop guys know a thing or two about getting flawless painted surfaces...
