No so much with modern spray equipment. The old HVHP guns created a fog, but the new systems are required to have 65% efficiency by law for VOC compliance. They're able to run much lower pressures and get better atomization than an HVHP. http://www.sata.com/index.php?id=satajet3000khvlp&L=11 I've used this system and there's really not much waste at all, and the finish is better because the atomization is incredible and there's virtually no overspray. I haven't sprayed filler, but I've seen it done. It doesn't seem to be much different.

So, even with an older gun like mine (Binks Mach 1, and an old Campbell Hausefield touchup gun)- you've got to look at time too. For clear topcoat of Awlcraft 2000, it recommends two coats, three if you're going to rub it out aggressively, and it takes an hour to spray all three coats. If you spend longer you've messed it up. That's worth something to me.
