Your C of G is further forward than you might think for the reason that Stephen explained.
If you want to check, sit on a board that is balanced on a stick placed sideways under the board. Assume the sort of posture you would have in a kayak and get a (highly amused) spectator to take a measurement of how far in front of your back the stick needs to be to balance.
