One possibility would be to glass the outside (hull at least) and then take it for a paddle and/or get some experienced paddlers to try it out.
Once you are certain that it has 'potential' then the rest of the work might seem more worthwhile.

When you post more details (pics?), some accurate measurements of length, beam, deck to hull distances fwd and aft of cockpit might give some hints of the design origins. It may be a variant of a popular plan.
