I agree Al . The joint is trapped between two strips and then encased in fiberglass. It's not going anywhere. And on the finished boat, no more noticable than a scarf joint. Matching the wood is more important than that tiny joint.
Baseboard is different, it needs a scarf for appearance sake.

: +1 Butt joints don't affect strength of the fiberglassed hull/deck,
: are easy to place wherever convenient (away from the most twisty

: result in excellent fairing. I used them on my first boat with
: 3/16" strips, and as far as I could tell, they had no
: perceptible affect on the fairness of the finished surface.

: Cutting the square ends for butt joints is dead easy and quick with
: a little home made miter box and a dovetail or Japanese pull
