Are baseboards the first ones laid on the sheer where the hull and deck join? If so, I agree - there is no way you could get them fair otherwise. The scarfs will be less likely to break if placed in lower stress locations.

One more thing about butt joints - they are easier to align fairly than scarf joints are. Getting a scarf precisely aligned is more complicated because the lengthwise and crosswise alignment interact. That is, if you get the lengthwise alignment off slightly, it will always simultaneously put the crosswise position out of alignment. When I have used scarf joints for other purposes, I have found that about the only way to get them reliably seated is to clamp them between two other boards so that lengthwise pressure on the scarfed boards seats the joint against the outside boards. Butt joints are easier because you butt them together, and they stay precisely butted while you adjust the lateral alignment.

: I agree Al . The joint is trapped between two strips and then
: encased in fiberglass. It's not going anywhere. And on the
