Al, I meant baseboard in houses, also crown and other trim. If scarfed at 45 degrees, the joint is less noticeable when viewed straight on.
For me, this is hardly a consideration in a strip 3/4" wide. The only butt I ever notice on my boats is one where two strips came up short and I inserted a piece about 1/8" long to save the strips. (The ends were already fitted.) I smile at that one spot from time to time.

: adjust the lateral alignment.
