Hi Guys,and Sean,
I can see this one's been done to death all right,however...I got a way of doing it [scarf joints] that takes less than a minute and is about as simple and idiot proof as I can get...Given that the strip will be wrapped in glass/epoxy I don't worry about how long and what angle the scarf is,and I like to see my scarfs and anything else I do with wood joinery,being an honest fellow.I get the two lengths of strip and put them on the bench in the way I want it to end up.Then I "roll"one strip end over end and ALSO,turn that same strip over.I then place them "together"and clamp with strong paddling hand.
I then rough cut with a saw or whatever is at hand both strips together,often a knife.I then plane the scarf surfaces making SURE they are square.Then I "un"roll the originally rolled strip and do the rotation and, hey, the two angles when added together make 180 degrees and one perfectly scarfed strip[a special angle of 90 degrees I believe you call a but joint!.Yes, I can see the join and these are sweet.
All that other stuff is just mind bogglingly complex...
