Hi Scott, i'm a first time builder myself, but had a pretty good idea of what I wanted, based on the various boats, I have paddled..

You choice has to be a compromise (or fusion) between your current abilities, your weight/height,and what water you'll be using it in. If you want to build a boat for mostly greenland rolling, then there are several designs out there. For touring, you also have a lot of choices. many designs could be adapted to a yost style build with a little creativity..

You'd want to look for a displacement of your weight+kayak weight+ the amount of gear you'll bring As an example I'm building a boat that is designed to carry: 90kg paddler, 20 kg kayak and 30 kg gear = 140 kg displacement. I would be able to carry more, but this is the optimum that I'm looking for..

So best bet is go paddle some different boats, and use those as your guide.. but you're probably looking in the 17-18 foot range - then start comparing designs.
