Most of this has been mentioned, but having done a lot of plane sharpening I can share the following:
Use water, dry sharpening is hard on the blade and hard on the stone.
Start with the back of the blade and make sure it is well polished before going to your angles.
Get at least an 800 grit wet stone to do your final polishing.
Use a guide for consistent angles.
