Other: Magnetic hatches and compass?

I'm thinking about putting magnetic hold-downs on the hatch cover of a project.
Has anybody done research on how all those pairs of magnets affect a boat compass?
How close can the compass be to the hatch before it is affected?
It could be a nasty surprise on a foggy day, I think.
