"Around here" where?

I did one boat and used Minwax polyurethane matt varnish on the hull and it worked out nice. Make sure you stir the contents scraping the bottom and sides of the can because the wax in the paint is what makes it matt. (oil based finish not water based poly)

The other possibility is to use your black paint and go over it with 000 steel wool which will take off the gloss.
