Abrasive pads work well- I don't like steel wood because it falls apart. I like the Norton or 3M "scotchbrite"-type pads. They come in different grits, just like sandpaper. You have to use long strokes in one direction or it will look horrible. It would not be ridiculous to walk the entire length of the boat for each stroke- it's what I'd do. For furniture when we did this at the shop where I worked we always used furniture wax like Johnson's or Minwax to lubricate the pad while we did it. It gives a more refined highly polished look and less of a scratchy look. I don't see a reason why you couldn't do that with your kayak.

That one quart of flattening agent will do a LOT of paint jobs...
