I found using glue sticks to be a bit 'scary' though they all did exit for me (mini-sticks coated with PVA mold release).
Have you tried the tubing method with wire or rope liner as well ? (I haven't, yet)

And is the idea just to wrap the glue stick with teflon tape?

BTW, I found that some of my fittings (using glass sleeving) leaked, and required a 'lump of epoxy goop' molded around them inside the boat to seal them up.
