Interesting concept, thanks for the information and links. The extended waterline may help reduce drag but I would have thought it would be a wet boat in rough conditions; however it is possible the shape acts like a kind of coaming to deflect the spray. The secondary stability must be rather low however, in fact I imagine stability is low altogether, both from its appearance and the nervousness of the paddler who was entering it for the first time and needed help. The shape may be driven as much by the characteristics of the material available as by performance in the water. Too little is known about this type.
