I see a lot of folks using particle board and MDF, but I personally don't like those because in humid climates like mine they can "wilt" and also particle board likes to chip if you screw into it, like maybe a really tough strip and you screw it down for extra holding. The best material (my opinion) would be solid wood, but due to cost the next best and more cost effective approach would be a good quality plywood without voids in the middle layers. (like a furniture grade ply).
I don't use staples, so I don't know if maybe a quality plywood might be too hard for stapling into. ??? MDF may be better for that. However, if you are a packrat like myself and always keep stuff just in case you might decide to build another one day, go with the quality stuff. If you do stapleless construction you can drill holes or even cut a slot all around the edge of plywood forms to facilitate clamping.
