: It seems so strange that they would use a blow torch when a simple
: heat gun is so very effective at doing the same job. They do say

I first used a heat gun in the early eighties, to remove paint, at a window restoration shop I worked at.
The sharp curves of my baidarka sterns required me to try different methods of bending strips.
In about 1995 I started using the heat gun to bend strips and quickly found a lot of other uses for it.
At that time, I knew of no other strip builders using a heat gun, to bend strips or for any other
purposes.
I became a vocal advocate for it's use on this BB and it is a standard tool in my plans.
Sometimes a tool from another area of construction crosses over to a new one.
But it still may be unknown to many.
I remember talking to a fellow at a boat show about this. He told me how he worked in the aircraft industry for
years, in aluminum fabrication. During a lay-off he got a job at a company that made street cars.
He brought in a tool used in the aircraft industry to join metal parts. As he was working he suddenly
noticed everyone in the shop had stopped working and were watching him use his aircraft tool.
They had never seen this tool before and were mesmerized at how easily it did what they had struggled
with for years.
