You have it right. Some folks use a long board and sand between the deck and hull when joining so that everything is flush and smooth.

You just need a good area of contact so when it is time to build the deck you can start with a level surface and not have to fight the deck "sheer strip."

I too built a guilly from Nick's book and am now in a 12 step program to help my addiction, I have 5 boats down 7 to go.
