There was a small boat project in Wooden Boat a few years ago that featured traditional strip planking, which used 3/4" thick strips, and they were edge-nailed the way you describe. Sometimes reinventing the wheel is just a lot of work and not a better solution. I'd be worried about the pins staying on track and not bending an breaking through the strip. If you're not careful about grain orientation , even the rectangular 18-ga brads will bend out through the side of a workpiece. I'd also be worried about exposing them as you sand.

It would be a lot of work if it didn't go well. What would it work to make a test piece?
