Have you thought of using hot glue stiching ala-Rob Macks idea? I have been doing that for the last 4 boats and it works great. After you clamp the strip in place you surface glue the joint with a dot of high strength hot glue about every 1.5 inches, which sets up in about a minute. After that you simply remove your primary clamps and move on to the next strip since the wood glue between the strips now has time to cure. After the wood glue cures you simply take a scrapper and scrape the hot glue off the surface. I can strip a boat this way as fast as stapling.
