I have used a 23 gauge upholstery stapler when necessary on my boats. Smaller holes than standard staples yet they still show after finishing, and the thin staples can be difficult to remove. They hold good but tend to break when you go to remove them. One other thing they are really thin, I could see a pin just bending and not holding a stubborn strip. All that said I still use this stapler when necessary, my boats are for the most part "staple less" for the best results blue tape and time seem to work the best.

Give the pinner a try on a sample it may work just fine for you. One more thing to consider is if you don’t sink the pins all the way it will be easier to remove them, just be careful not to cut yourself on the pin cushion before you are done.
