I agree. I wouldn't do a wash coat, but some people are set on a path. If you were set on a path, I'd use glue, not shellac. I'm sorry if it seemed that I was advocating sealing.

My guess is that the blotchiness in question is actually grain reversals, and there's nothing to be done about them.
