Actually I did consider a side opening but it is in a tight spot so you can't get room to slide the lumber in even if you pull it out. Down the road I plan to build a box on the side of the house to hold kayaks, surfboards, and longer lumber. This box is mainly for the exotic stuff. It also will house some of my less used tools.
