I came up with a similar idea before being pointed to the article mentioned above. I will also be using heat & bond tape for strength. I will probably stuff the edges of the skin fabric into the mortise in the center of gunwales. I've decided to us a wooden spline rather than a nylon cord soaked in epoxy. The rub rail will hold everything tight. If I ever need to re-skin, then I can easily do so--remove the rub rail, pop out the spline, and use my iron to loosen the fabric from the frame. At least that is what I hope to do. I'll know in a few days when I give this all a try.
