Epoxy adheres to wood beter than any paint or varnish. That is why it is used as a glue. It seals wood so well it doesn't matter what you coat it with. Epoxy is protecting the wood. The paint or varnish is just going along for the ride.
The only caveat is some epoxies generate a substance called "amin blush" that is waxy and must be scrubbed off with water. Even for epoxies that claim no amin blush it's worth the effort to wash the epoxy surface down anyway.
If any particular paint needs a primer to adhere to epoxy it's because of the peculiarities of the paint. Epoxy itself is not very porous and fairly inert.
