I've made my Nymph canoes with softwood gunwales covered with glass. The softwood is lighter, and the glass gives them toughness. I also don't like the idea of having to sand and re-protect hardwood gunwales every year. The glass gives great protection.

It looks like you will have a beautiful canoe.
