John, check this forum pic about the skeg I installed on my Guillemot L. I think you are right on track. My skeg is about 8 inches diagonally( The pic shows larger than it is). I installed a Kajak skeg. I found the Guillemot L is great for turning in tight mangrove tunnels/canals. Just dropping the skeg an inch or two would really tame the bow to track true in less than 10 mile/hr winds. Between 10 and 15 miles/hr winds I continue to adjust it down to 4 to 6 inches as necessary. I only once drop it completely down with white cap spray, 3 ft bay rollers, and wind gust 30 plus miles/hr. So I think you do not have to make your skeg any longer than 8 inches, and 6 inches would probably work for 90% of the conditions. Search my name for more pics and info. Good luck..
