I use a double-bladed paddle on my Wee Lassie style canoes, they're meant for it. I tried a DBP with a 14 ft 2 fiberglass seater canoe a few years ago but was disappointed, it was fast and efficient but the canoe didn't handle as well as a kayak or Wee Lassie type; poor tracking and tendency for instability when using a sweep turn - much better control with a standard paddle. But not all canoes are alike . . . so I would suggest borrowing a DBP if you can else buy a cheap one that you can return if it doesn't work out.
