I do use Western Red Cedar, being from the Pacific Northwest it is the easiest to get. I shave the tips to a little less than 1/2 inch with a bullnose type edge.

I don't have a good photo of them; I suppose I'll need to do that now. This photo is of me in my Sea Ranger with my favorite (to date) stick.
