Gil Kirk Patricks’s first edition of “Building A Strip Canoe”, http://www.amazon.com/Building-Strip-Canoe-Plans-Canoes/dp/0899330266/ref=pd_rhf_se_shvl48 , recommended using Durham’s Water Putty for gap filling. My first boat build was a Kirkpatrick canoe. I end up with a lot of gap filling from trying to bleach the wood after sanding. I then did a full canoe smear with Durhams. It took a lot of sanding to clean all of the strips of putty and was left with all gaps and staple holes filled with a light-yellow putty that contrasted with the WRC. I discovered the putty can be colored with analine dye when mixing and with effort can match the wood.
