: Hello all,
: Looking for an easy out..
: Has anyone tried smearing water soluble Durhams wood flour on the
: entire hull after the initial 60 to 80 grit sanding/shaping for
: the purpose of filling gaps ? Scraping with a squeegee, wiping
: excess off with old towels then
: sanding with 120grit after the hull is thoroughly dried? I was
: thinking a light staining after the final sanding to even out
: the color and possibly masking the filler.
: I did this on a bulkhead. When dried - sanded off with the 120
: grit. It worked ok on this small area but hesitant to tackle a
: large area.
: I bought a whole tub of this years ago and thought I might use it.
: The strips were in such poor shape, I see a large task of
: filling coming up.
: Thank you
: Douglas
I use a combination of West System 407 Low-Density filler (microballoon-based) and their 410 Microlight filler. The 407 is red-brown in color, the 410 is very light tan. Mix in varying amounts into epoxy to make a putty that matches the color of most boat building woods. Many companies market a microballoon filler of the same color, but I do not know about the Microlight filler.
