Well... butane is heavier than propane (C4H10 vs C3H8) so should work better- though both mix pretty freely in air, so most likely the effect won't be from a dense layer in such a small volume. I suspect than anything convenient used to displace the air would be fine. In the lab we flow dry 99.9% N2 to displace air and remove the H20 lines from the spectrometer we use.
