Check out the "foredeck" hatch- on the new Tiderace Excite, for example. I had a chance to paddle one of these during a five day class at the Kayak Academy. The "day hatch" on this boat was not accessible by the paddler, but the foredeck hatch is great. I'm trying to figure out how to add one to my Ganymede. With a 15cm diameter cover, the space is tight but big enough for my extra hats, a banana and clif bar, and a few other small items. It's just a shallow hatch and it's near the peak of the deck, so that's extra space in many boats. The cover opened and closed easily (VCP-like lid). Just thought I'd share that.
