I didn't add poplar to my list because of the 'green' issue (sometimes it turns green after the epoxy hits it, IIRC) but it is a good (cheap,machines easily, not splintery) wood also.
Willow is a similar 'trash wood', though it is pretty smelly when machining, IME.
I'm pretty sure I can build a S&G epoxy glass boat as quickly and cheaply as a SOF, so I'm not likely to need to select stringer and rib wood anytime soon. However, yellow cedar and ash would be at the top of my list for toughness, and both bend well. I've bent quite a bit of yellow cedar for guitar sides, and it's like rubber when it gets hot and moist.
