I now use a laminated frame top (masik) at the forward end of the cockpit, it's stronger than the plywood so can be much thinner, mine are about 3/4" high and are rounded so your legs easily slide past that frame going in or out of the cockpit.

If it's a very ^ shaped deck it helps to steam the plies of the lamination, even spruce steams well enough for this.
