I too buy from the local building supply merchant because a) the better woodyards are too far or b) I am too lazy to make the trip or c) it's not worth the trip because I need just a little wood (delete as applicable).

The local supplier recently put all his lumber under cover so it is nice and dry but I'm no longer allowed to pick over the stack even though I always put it back the way I found it. However, the guy who works there has a boring job and perks up when I mention it's for a boat. he will - provided I don't show up on one of the busy days - do the sorting for me. He understands that I sometimes want vertical grain and need tight knots or knots that I can work around and usually does a half-decent job of giving me what I need. I've found there are good times and bad times to ask for a little help . . .
