I've seen commercial boats crushed, more than once, with ratchet straps, not hard to do it. Just don't need "that" much tension to keep the boat on the rack.

Even if you don't crush it, it's very easy to deform the boat using them and letting the boat then sit in the direct sun, just overall a bad idea for kayaks, great for more rugged cargo though.
