I agree with everything the rest of the folks here posted. Your concept of the grip is correct. You wrap the other three fingers around the blade itself. This allows you to pull the paddle through the water with almost no gripping at all. I can do it with just my finger tips.

Bill's comment on the width of the loom is very important. Go narrower rather than longer. If you go to wide, you will feel it in your shoulders. I set my width by dropping my arms to my sides, then lift my hands straight in front of me so the my arms are at a 90 angle and grip the paddle blank. I mark the position and that becomes my shoulder location. Make sense?

One other note, expect to wear gloves. The loom will wear a hole in your hand quick.
