Hi Eric,
Comfort of grip is a very important factor, it's not a good thing to have your hunting equipment stopping you from hunting. Give the grip area a burnish, that will flatten any roughness. Not much oil is needed for paddles, tis basically wipe on, wait a few minutes and wipe off.
