I don't know about nylon, but with polyester I had a problem with inconsistent penetration of varnish (Minwax). Some places I got penetration to the wood frame, others it did not. So the penetration showed up very dark compared to no penetration. Since I was trying for the non colored translucent effect this was extremely irritating, and nasty looking. I did not get any suggestions from the Forum, it seemed that others did not have this problem.
