Yes you can trim the cable and plastic cable housing to length. In fact, I used bike lube on the cable because of its waterproof abilities. The only problem I had was with the plastic skeg box. Once installed I had problems with lowering the skeg; it would bind, or buckle the cable. After studying the situation, I discovered the binding was due to high resistance from the raised white flanges on the inside of the skeg box (The flanges provide the resistance to keep the skeg in the up position. ) I took a flat file and carefully file down the flanges. In fact I had to do this several times to get the right balance in upper tension and ease of lowering. I believe saltwater has compounded the situation. You can research this forum to see some of my pictures. Everything seems to be working now. It really works great on the Guillemot L in improving tracking with tidal currents and windy crossings. I did a flush mount on the inside and used thicken epoxy filet. ( I ordered the skeg box version without the lip on outside of the box to aid in a inside flush mount installation.)
