I haven't tried this, but I think you can get good results with a digital camera and lazer level.
First mark the centerline with a chalk line or narrow tape. Mount the laser on a tripod or whatever and arrange it so it paints a line where you want the station, put a ruler at the location and take a pic from roughly head-on or astern. You can then scale and print it. This should be as accurate as any other method but quicker much less likely to have an error . . .
