: Hello, I am starting to build a Red Fish Spring Run and would like
: to know how precise your form symmetry is. .....................There are differences that get up to 1/16". Does
: that matter? Has anyone else check this?
Like Kurt, I always work from half-plans, and I make templates from doorskin or posterboard (cardboard).
I like to think that I can get away with small errors in boatbuilding, as long as the mistakes are symmetrical! ;-)
1/16" isn't very much, but if you later 'correct' that error with your sanding block, you could be changing your hull thickness/stiffness by quite a bit (especially if you are using 3/16" strips).
Working from half plans probably identifies me as an 'old-timer'. When I started building strip canoes (and later kayaks), plans never included full form templates, and I don't think they are very useful.
I think a lot of builders nowadays just get multiple photocopies of the plans and cut them apart to get their form outlines. (?). It's a bit expensive, and my local professional/industrial copy shop refuses to copy anything with a 'copyright' logo on it. I use the copy service at the local 'big box' stationery store, or pull out the carbon paper and just trace from the originals on to my template material.
You do need to be a bit careful not to stretch the paper if you are using the 'glue-plan-to-form' method.
