What works well is a couple of 1 x 4's attached at both ends then pulled apart in the middle, with cross pieces added to make a sort of double-ended window cleaner's ladder. I can't remember what book I found that in, but it's a neat idea. it's very sound from an engineering point of view as it is virtually impossible to twist it; it is considerably more rigid than a square-ended ladder structure using similar dimension parts.
