Strip: Hinged hatches on guillemot Kayak?? *PIC*

Hi Folks
I am currrently part way through making a strip built guillemot 17' using Nick's excellent book but would like to make my hatches totally flush without bungees or straps on the outside.
I was thinking I would like to put a pair of hinges on them and a flush ring handle with some sort of catch.
Has anyone else done this and if so does it work well or is it a bad idea?Does anyone know of a good source for my fittings in the U.K.
You can see why I don't want to cover the decks with bungees having made this pattern on the top.
I was thinking of making my hatch or hatches octagonal with the hinges on one of the sides.
